This in person class will cover a number of different surface embroidery stitches, suitable for use in Jacobean crewelwork embroidery. You will be working on traditional linen twill, using a range of beautiful shades and colours of crewel wool.

​This in person class will run on: Saturday 11th January 2025 from 10am-4pm GMT.

Crewelwork traditionally means surface stitches in crewel wool, on linen twill. It became particularly popular in the early 17th century during the reign of King James I, utilising stylised flora and fauna to create beautiful, often very large, designs for bed hangings, bed covers or screens. This particular style is known as Jacobean Crewelwork, after King James, however crewelwork means any surface stitching with crewel wool.


For this class you will have the option of working either a cushion or a lampshade in the Jacobean Crewelwork style. You will also have access to the full range of Appleton crewel wools to enable you to choose your own colours and shades. This class will cover a variety of different stitches used in Crewelwork, such as coral stitch, long & short, fishbon…
