Crewelwork traditionally means surface stitches in crewel wool, on linen twill. It became particularly popular in the early 17th century during the reign of King James I, utilising stylised flora and fauna to create beautiful, often very large, designs for bed hangings, bed covers or screens. This particular style is known as Jacobean Crewelwork, after King James, however crewelwork means any surface stitching with crewel wool.

This eight week sampler course will explore over 40 different stitches used in Crewelwork, broken down into different stitch types, a few being trellis, fillings, outlines and long & short. Stitches taught will include cretan, fishbone, buttonhole, leaf, wheatear, bullion, whipped wheels, pekinese, heavy chain, laid work and satin, to name but…
